Registered Thai Therapist (RTT)

Minimum requirements are 250 hours of formal hands-on study of traditional Thai massage (nuad boran). Your study must have been done in traditional style, on a floor mat, addressing the entire body, and the content must be based completely in traditional Thai massage and Thai medicine. At least 40% of your qualifying study must be with teachers or schools in the THAI network.

Elapsed time: At least eighteen (18) months must have elapsed since your first study of traditional Thai massage, and your most recent study must have occurred no longer than 2 years prior to your application.

Valid courses: The initial 250 required hours must be hands-on study of traditional Thai massage. In most cases, long-term programs of study at only one school or with only one teacher are valid for only 50% of total hours toward the RTT requirements, and a transcript may be requested.  All “programs” of study for 4 or more weeks at any school in Thailand or elsewhere are valid for only 50% of total study hours. Teacher training and long programs of 150-300 hours or more will be counted as 50%. Online and virtual courses are generally not valid.

After the initial 250 hours are met, other types of courses may be acceptable for higher levels of membership, subject to consideration by the Membership Committee. These may include online study; foot reflexology; Thai acupressure; and Thai accessory modalities such as reusi dat ton; tok sen, etc. Hybrid modalities that incorporate Thai massage techniques with Western anatomy, table and chair massage, osteopathy, and other disciplines as well as other Asian disciplines such as chi nei tsang, shiatsu, yam khang, and Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine studies are not valid toward any level of membership in THAI.  Also, repeating a course that you have previously taken with the same teacher or school does not qualify. Online courses are not valid, with the exception of a maximum of 50 hours of traditional Thai medical theory. Finally, no more than 15% of your total hours may be based on courses for which you do not have a certificate or transcript (undocumented study), or based in Thai herbal studies.

Teachers and study periods: RTTs must pursue study with at least two (2) different teachers or schools, one of which must be affiliated with THAI. At least 40% of your qualifying study must be with teachers or schools in the THAI network. At least 20% of your total qualifying study must be documented hands-on study with other teachers, which means that you may study with a single teacher or school in the THAI network only to a maximum of 80% of the total qualifying hours.

If you have completed more than 350 hours of qualifying study, you may use the same application to apply as RTT Advanced. Advanced RTT members must study with at least three (3) different teachers or schools, two of which must be affiliated with THAI, over a minimum period of three (3) years.  Advanced RTT members must also have studied at least once in Thailand, and have completed at least 10 hours of Thai cultural studies.

Session notes and other documents: You must have written detailed notes of at least 50 Thai massage sessions with clients, and you must submit notes from 5 of these sessions with your materials. All Registered Thai Therapists agree in writing to maintain records of all client sessions, and to further their studies in Thai massage by taking continuing education courses. Registered Thai Therapists receive a certificate suitable for framing, and may use the title of Registered Thai Therapist (RTT) after their name, and in conjunction with advertising and promotion.

Study with THAI Teachers and Schools: Remember, at least 40% of your qualifying study must be with teachers or schools in the THAI network, anywhere around the world. In other words, if you are applying for RTT/Practitioner membership (minimum 250 hours of study), at least 100 of those study hours must be with THAI teachers and schools, and the remaining hours may be with teachers or schools that are not yet affiliated with THAI.
